The Springs Close Foundation

Colonel Springs understood that a good education is critical for improving quality of life. In fact, he believed this so strongly that he began giving interest-free student loans out of his own pocket in 1942 when the Springs Foundation was created.

Since that time, the student loan program has become a mainstay of the Foundation's operations, lending more than $9 million to just over 8,400 students.

The student loan program helps students achieve a post-secondary education in two different ways: through attendance at a four-year, accredited, degree-granting senior college or university in South Carolina or through attendance at York Technical College in Rock Hill. Students must live in, or their parents must be employed in, Lancaster County, Fort Mill Township or Chester Township.

Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation

Interest-free loans available to USA Citizens and Texas residents who have graduated from Texas high schools. Must enroll as a full-time student at a Texas college/university, accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, with the intention of completing requirements toward a first bachelor's degree.

Graduating high school seniors entering as college freshmen are reviewed by high school class rank in relation to SAT/ACT scores. Eligible students must be either in the top 10% of their high school graduating class OR have a minimum 1500 SAT or 22 ACT score.

College level students must maintain a 2.75 GPA overall. Applicants with the above MINIMUM scores will be given consideration for approval; however, this is not to be defined as automatic approval. High school seniors must submit a transcript reflecting SAT/ACT scores and rank in class. Applications and transcripts will be presented to the directors in the order in which they are completed. Funds are limited, and it is advisable to submit requests as early as possible.

Students may contact our office by telephone or mail after November 1 each year to be placed on the mailing list for the upcoming fall/spring long-term school year. Application packets are accepted January 1 through February 28.

Evalee C. Schwarz Charitable Trust for Education

In order for an applicant to be considered, the student must:

• → Be a U.S. citizen
• → Qualify for financial need in the form of a government grant. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, located at www.fafsa.ed.gov
• → Be enrolled in a school in the state in which the student resides
• → Demonstrate an outstanding combination of standardized test scores (must rank in the top 10% nationally and class rank)
• → Not be seeking a law degree

Size of loan amounts generally range from $5,000 to $15,000, with a $50,000 lifetime cap per student. Applications are reviewed by the loan committee at its annual meeting in July. All applicants will be notified in writing of the committee’s decision shortly thereafter.

Hattie M. Strong Foundation

The Strong Foundation administers a loan program for American college students, studying in the U.S. or abroad, who are entering their final year in a Bachelor or Graduate Degree program. Loans are made solely on the basis of individual merit, without regard to race, sex, or religion, are interest-free and do not require collateral. Applicants must be enrolled, as full-time students, in an accredited four-year college or graduate school. Maximum loan is $3000.00.

Applicants should write between January 1st and March 31st, giving a brief personal history and identification of the educational institution attended, the subject studied, the date expected to complete those studies and the amount of funds needed. If the applicant qualifies for consideration for a loan, a formal application will be sent to be filled out and returned to the foundation.

Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program

Program Purpose:

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program is a federally funded, State-administered program to recognize exceptionally able high school seniors who show promise of continued excellence in postsecondary education. [34 CFR Part 654, Subpart A, Section 654.1]

Eligibility - Applicant must, during the same secondary academic year in which the scholarship is awarded:

• → Be a graduate of a public or private secondary school or have received the recognized equivalent of a high school      diploma (GED)
  
• → Be a legal resident of the State in which he or she applies
• → Be a U.S. citizen or national of the United States or have evidence from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization      Service that he or she is a permanent resident or is in the United States for other than a temporary purpose
• → Have applied or been accepted for enrollment at an institution of higher education;
• → Certify that he or she is not ineligible to receive assistance as a result of default on a Federal student loan or      other obligation
• → File, with the school that he or she plans to attend, a Statement of Selective Service Registration Status. A student      attending a military academy is ineligible to receive a Byrd scholarship. [34 CFR Part 654, Subpart A, Section        654.2]

How It Works

Each year, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation supports those special students who exemplify their potential to become the leaders of tomorrow. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation works on the behalf and at the direction of the entire Coca-Cola system to reinforce the Coca-Cola systems legacy of community support while enhancing educational opportunities in the United States through scholarship awards and enrichment programs for young people who demonstrate, through academic excellence and leadership in their communities, their capacity for and commitment to making a difference in the world.

The Fulbright Scholar Program

The Fulbright Program, the U.S. government's flagship program in international educational exchange, was proposed to the U.S. Congress in 1945 by then freshman Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. In the aftermath of World War II, Senator Fulbright viewed the proposed program as a much-needed vehicle for promoting “mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries of the world.” His vision was approved by Congress and the program signed into law by President Truman in 1946.

Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Since the program’s inception, more than 250,000 participants (chosen for their leadership potential) have had the opportunity to observe each others political, economic and cultural institutions.

The Knott Scholarship Fund

The Knott Scholarship Funds award full and partial tuition scholarships to each of the three Catholic colleges in Maryland: College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Loyola University Maryland, and Mount Saint Mary's University. To be eligible for these awards the student must be a Roman Catholic, reside within the Archdiocese of Baltimore and be a member of a Catholic parish in the Archdiocese.

Central Scholarship Bureau of Maryland

Offers loans of up to $10,000 to about 150 Marylanders. The bureau requires each borrower to find an adult to cosign, or commit to repay, the loan. The application deadline is May 10.

Background

It's easy to talk about the nursing shortage, and the other challenges facing the nursing profession - like the need for higher-level education among current nurses. Well, we decided we'd actually do something about it too.

The program is administered by Scholarship America, the nation's premier administrator of private scholarship programs. In this application cycle, we're giving away three scholarships of $2,500 each (in 2010, we awarded two). One will go to an ADN-prepared nurse who's going back to school for an RN to BSN program.

The second will go to a nurse who's going back to school for a Masters in Nursing or Doctorate in Nursing program.

The third will go to a non-nurse who's going back to school to become a nurse (in an Accelerated Second Degree BSN or Direct Entry MSN program). We look forward to continuing to expand the number of scholarships as time goes on.
